I’m keeping it light this week and probably next week too, as my son’s 13th birthday is this coming weekend, plus we had kid sleepovers here this past weekend and will have more this coming weekend, some related to the birthday shenanigans and some not. So aside from being really busy getting ready for his birthday (it seems that running a D&D game for him and his besties is becoming an annual thing, which takes a fair amount of prep on my part), there’ve been kids in the house who are not my own, so I’ve had to be a little more subtle or minimal with my cannabis use, which I don’t feel gives me the kind of experience I want to be able to speak deeply to strain. That and being busy and distracted, I don’t have a normal rambly story to tell for what I have had. All that being said, I’m working on a piece about the growing trend of hemp-derived THC-infused hemp products, and how I feel they’re only hurting the legit cannabis industry, so heads up on that. I’m thinking I’ll pair it with another hemp review.

So, Lemon Meringue, from SeaWeed Co. Regulars should know that I love lineages, and here we’ve got a pretty straight forward family tree (for the most part). Lemon Meringue is a cross of Lemon Skunk (itself a cross of two different Skunk phenotypes) and Cookies and Cream (a cross of Starfighter and a Girl Scout Cookies phenotype). Getting right into my experience with Lemon Meringue, the skunkiness I expected upon opening the bag hit more as a sweetly pungent lemon, though beneath it was lurking a bit of that herbal quality that I find so often trying to hide beneath the more in your face notes like the bright citrus of this strain. It’s one of those aromas that is simultaneously weedy and not at all weedy, if that makes sense. Put another way, if you’re familiar with the wider range of cannabis aromas, and not just the “that smells like weed” smell, then this can certainly hit like it’s good weed, but if you don’t, then the skunkiness of it may be lost and you might just get a pungent tone, almost like a menthol lemon. It’s weird, but I like it a lot.
The nugs are solid too, and I mean that literally and more figuratively. They’re relatively dense, but also good quality and seem well cultivated and processed. They have a nice and consistent medium green color, the pistils are long and tendrily (my favorite way to describe pistils, I’ve found), and the bud is sufficiently frosty with trichomes, though not so sticky that it comes away all on your hands and leaves nothing for the smoke. They broke up easily and ground well. Excellently grown and perfectly cured.
The smoke was another like I’ve been seeing more recently, where I found the initial hit harsher than I would have thought, but then it calmed down quickly. In this case, even the second hit was much smoother and somewhat buttery. That butteriness increased as it burned, which was a pleasant surprise. The flavor translated as expected, losing a bit of the subtlety of notes, but other than the natural bitterness of the smoke itself, the aromas carried over well, keeping a sweet and pungent citrus flavor.
The high was excellent. I felt lightly energized, which supported an uplifting focus and balance in the brain, and offset the light calmness in the body. I felt inspired, but able to stick to a task (which was a good thing, as this was one of my days where I needed to grocery shop and do some cleaning). This is one of those productive strains, like Super Lemon Haze, Lemon OG Haze, or even Jack Herer. I might not want to do my taxes after smoking Lemon Meringue, but despite the very light munchies and (thirsty…thirsties..? Thirstiness? I’m going with thirsties) thirsties, groceries and cleaning the kitchen didn’t pose serious threats. All in all, an experience I quite enjoyed and will enjoy again.
As always, thanks for reading, and if I can’t get one of these out next week, I’ll see you all the week after that. When I’ll officially have a teenager in the house…
