Good morning, Stoned Coasters. Some crazy shit came up going into this past weekend, and not only has it been distracting as hell, but it’s also demanded a fair amount of my time and energy, so I’m keeping things actually brief this week. Which works out perfectly, because I’ve got a strain I’ve been meaning to review for the last couple weeks, but as much as I enjoy it – which is quite a bit – the enjoyment isn’t from some deep and profound place, or due to it inspiring a thoughtful anecdote or lesson. It’s just really good, and really good at what it does.
White Nitro is another cultivar from Firefly Organics that has just knocked my socks off. The first of theirs that I wrote about, Albariño, is still one of my favorite strains, I’ve written up a couple of their Rosins (extracted by Helios), and I’ve got one or two more flowers they cultivated queued up in my spreadsheet for future reviews. I had intentionally moved my writing away from focusing on the cultivators for a couple of reasons: since I work in the industry and I know that some of my readers are the cultivators themselves, I didn’t want to unfairly show bias against or accidentally alienate anyone whose cannabis I am responsible for selling; but additionally I found that since I was writing more about some aspect of the experience of a cultivar, that unless it was specifically relevant, the focus was less on where it came from and more about where it took me. All that being said, I have generally noted at least in the tags who grew the thing, and if I have missed that on some, then I sincerely apologize to those growers, and if I notice one of those posts I’ll go back and edit that information in. By and large, the cultivators whom I’ve met and whose weed I’ve sold are good people, and even for those whose cannabis hasn’t been my favorite, I still want to encourage and promote them. I love this industry for its camaraderie, and try my best to avoid negativity.
I got distracted. And I’m not even high!
Firefly Organics. These guys are awesome, and I have really quite enjoyed almost every single thing I’ve had of theirs. There. A simple statement. Moving on.
White Nitro. Please please do me and yourself a favor and read my LitreACola review before proceeding.
Okay. Now that you’re caught up or refreshed we can proceed. It’s going to save me a bunch of typing.
The aroma is inviting, most immediately brings top notes of coffee and a fruity sweetness. Lurking beneath and almost buried in the aforementioned sweetness is a smooth diesel quality, reminding us of its parent Biodiesel (itself a hybrid of multiple Diesel strains). It does though evoke a comforting feeling from that initial burst of coffee, and I feel compelled to hold the jar in both my hands like I’m cradling a hot mug on a cold morning. Sucks that as I’m writing this we’re in the midst of coming out of a 90+ degree heatwave and are still mired in hot rainy weather. Also, this is not a morning high. But sometimes contradictions make life more interesting.
The buds are gorgeous, medium pale to pine green, wispy brown pistils spread throughout, and sparkling with trichomes. They’re fluffy and well-shaped, soft to the touch, but substantial in body. They display and break apart well, leaving just enough stickiness on the fingers to think “Ooh, this is sticky” but not so much as to think “Aww, I lost almost a hit’s worth of THC on my fingers…”
The hits are medium-bodied and buttery, with a bit of spicy throat-feel. The flavors remain largely the same from the aroma, but invert, where the diesel becomes the top note and the coffee and sweetness are muted a bit. It is also one of those smokes that does leave a lingering tart bitterness, which I don’t absolutely love, but I will forgive. Most weed does leave some bitter flavor from smoking, so I don’t hold that against any of them. It would be like holding against my cats the fact that I have to clean up after them. I knew what I was getting into, and I don’t love them any less.
The high. This is why I wanted you to read (or reread) LitreACola. Take everything I said there, and take away the part where I uncontrollably fall asleep. That being said, it will let me go to sleep, but just on my own terms. I love LitreACola, but I have a very good chance of nodding off by accident, and White Nitro seems to avoid this. I am just as stoned and heavy feeling, but I have a bit more control over when and how I fall asleep. I guess the narrow distinction is that while LitreACola makes me pass out, White Nitro encourages but doesn’t force me to to sleep. And obviously no shade on LitreACola. Sometimes I want to be forced to go to sleep, but sometimes I want to make the choice for myself, and that’s where White Nitro shines.
